Step 1: Download and install AVG from this link (http://download.cnet.com/AVG-Anti-Virus-Free-Edition/3000-2239_4-10320142.html?part=dl-10044820&subj=dl&tag=button&cdlPid=11014801).
Step 2: Open AVG

Step 3: Click on the "Computer Scanner" link on the left sidebar

Step 4: Remove any threats found and reboot your machine.
The latest version of AVG (9.0) should be compatible with Gameguard and cause you no issues when loading the client. However, if you still wish to add exceptions, please use the Tools menu at the top, and select Advanced Settings... Then navigate to: Resident Shield -> Excluded Files.

You can add cabalmain.exe, cabal.exe, update.exe, gameguard.des etc. in there.
