The Illusion Castle was the second dungeon to feature a completely free-moving camera system, after the Forbidden Island. Compared to the relatively fixed camera angles of other dungeons this was a very welcome change indeed, and set the standard for the future.

The dungeon is introduced to you as a rescue mission, as you search for the missing Freed, one of the major allies in the normal story quests. You never find him, but you do find what could be clues as to what happened to him on his journey into the caverns about two-thirds of the way into the Underworld.

Illusion Castle Underworld is set inside a vast, echoing cavern complex where you have to fight your way through monsters of the Phantasmal Clan (think Lake in Dusk, and of course Lakeside), up to the fearsome Kanaph Lycanus, the monstrous doorkeeper to Illusion Castle: Radiant Hall. When you defeat Kanaph you can see the massive doors of the Radiant Hall castle, but you do not enter them.

Illusion Castle Underworld is a fairly popular solo dungeon for higher level players, although for quick and smooth gameplay the easiest runs are completed with a friend or two.
